Waterfront Park on the Willamette River

The last thing we did with my parents before they had to leave was walk around Waterfront Park in down town Portland. We actually had never been there only had seen it while driving and wanted to go check it out.

Its really not much of a park but more of a really long walking path along the Willamette River. The Willamette is the river that splits Portland in half. When ever I hear about something or a place in Portland I always have to ask which side of the river its on, just so I know how far away it is. The Waterfront park does have a few grass areas and water fountains along the way.

It was a beautiful day.

BEWARE of the little history lesson....
A "Benson Bubbler". These are famous drinking fountains around Portland. They constantly have a flow of water ( you don't have to push a button to turn on). The have a funny story behind them. A well know lumber mill owner Simon Benson, one day in 1912, was walking around his mill and noticed his workers had all been drinking beer. When he asked them why they were drinking in the middle of the day they told him that they had nothing else to drink. So he had 20 of these drinking fountains placed around Portland. (there is much more now) Apparently beer consumption decreased 25% in Portland after they were place.

A fun fountain to play in. There is a little button on one of the benches that you can push and it will change the shape of the fountain. It can be very dangerous for an unsuspecting person walking across and the fountain starts to spray them. Or just really fun for the people watching. The kids had a blast playing in it. Even a few adults that were there.

Wes decided to act like the natives of the waterfront park. It is down town and we saw a few homeless people sleeping on benches, even some sleeping on the rocks (not sure how that could be comfortable) so Wes decided to try it out. Funny boy!

Salmon Fishing Trip ???

For Father's Day, my mom and I got Orrin and my Dad a salmon fishing trip. They got up really early and went out to Astoria with a fishing guide.

They didn't get any fish but I think they still had fun. At least thats what they told us.

Victoria, British Columbia, Canada

This summer we were able to take a trip to Victoria, Canada with my parents. It's about a 4 hour drive to get on the ferry and then a little longer on the ferry. The boys love riding on the ferry and I have to admit I love it too. Its lots of fun.

When we got to Victoria we decided to go to the underwater sea gardens. You go into this building that takes you down under the water and then you watch a show that a scuba diver gives out in the water. The boys loved it.

The water front is so beautiful. They have people performing and selling handcrafted things. Lots of stuff to look at.

Our ferry boat.

Walking along the water front.

(my kids not so happy to stop playing and take a picture)

This is a pirate ship the boys found. Later that day we even saw some pirates on the ship dancing. (not really sure why)

We had a blast watching the sea planes fly out and in the harbor.

One place we had to see was the place were Orrin's younger brother had fallen from, while on a high school trip. He fell from the top of this building. It confirmed to us that he was being watched over that day I cant believe he was even able to make it through it. What a miracle! You can read about it here.

The Farmont Express Hotel (behind us). Its a really old and beautiful hotel.

The bug Museum.  The boys loved this place. They had every bug you could think of and even let you hold most of them. ( a few of the poisonous ones you had to be over 18 years old)

We were in the bug museum for a few hours. The boys loved learning all about them.

We had to get some fish and chips for lunch. YUMMY! Fresh fish from the harbor.

The dry side of the Island.

Check out the Canadian Maple Leaf. They are huge.

The boys loved staying in the hotel too.

We had a blast and it was really fun spending some time with my parents. It is a beautiful place.
